About Us

CARF Accreditation means our organization has passed an in-depth review, and meets rigorous international guidelines for both service and quality. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities has awarded Umbrella Wellness Center with a qualified endorsement showing that we conform to recognized service standards, and are focused on delivering the most favorable results for the persons we serve.

NARR has developed the most widely used national standard for the operation of recovery residences. The mission of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences is to enhance access to quality recovery residences by setting standards, providing education, and advocating for those in addiction recovery.

Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) is the credentialing agency approved by the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) to administer a strict certification process for recovery residences. A certified “Recovery Residence” provides alcohol-free and illicit drug-free housing to individuals with substance-related disorders, addictive disorders, or co-occurring mental health and substance-related disorders.

Umbrella Wellness Recovery Residences is our Non-Profit Fund at the Community Foundation of Carroll County, which operates our recovery homes.

Our Story…

Emily Barriere and Sybil Buckwalter are the co-founders of Umbrella Wellness Center, but more importantly, they are also mother and daughter. Emily struggled with addiction throughout her teenage years, into adulthood. Her mother, Sybil, felt the impact during Emily’s active addiction, struggling emotionally with legal problems and fear for her daughter’s safety.

After successfully completing Substance Use Disorder Treatment, Emily was able to stay sober. Sobriety helped her get her life back on track, and she flourished from there. Emily and Sybil started this family-owned business to inspire individuals in recovery to overcome addiction by finding purpose. They advocate for people who may face barriers to recovery such as housing, gender, community, disability, and stigma.

“I read my Life Recovery Bible every day. It incorporates the 12 steps into my faith. I enjoy offering recovery-based Bible Study to participants. Service is an essential part of ongoing recovery.”
-Emily

“We pride ourselves in going above and beyond a typical sober home. Our services provide resources and accessibility that people need to rebuild. More than that, the additional support we offer individuals gives us opportunities to truly connect.”
-Sybil
